As a part of a broad strategy to improve both productivity and capacity at its PortMiami facility, Seaboard Marine has added two more new Liebherr-built LHM550 cranes to its terminal operations.  These two mobile harbor cranes, the largest of their type based at PortMiami, each have an outreach of 177 feet and a maximum capacity of 158 short tons.  They are well equipped to handle the Miami-based vessels in Seaboard Marine’s fleet, which are steadily growing larger.

Built in Germany for Post Panamax-sized vessels, the LHM550 can handle, if needed, up to 18 cargo containers across, depending upon the configuration.  One of the largest mobile harbor cranes made by Liebherr, the LHM550 can be used for different types of cargoes: containers, bulk products and product loading.  In the case of Seaboard Marine’s PortMiami operations, they will be principally used for loading containers. Since these cranes travel on tires, they can safely go any direction and the logical ergonomic design allow for ease of operation.
These two new mobile harbor cranes, which were used today for the first time, join four other Liebherr mobile harbor cranes currently at Seaboard’s PortMiami facility.  In addition, Seaboard has dedicated access to three PortMiami gantry cranes for its ships.  With a total of nine reliable cranes always at its disposal, Seaboard is able to promptly load and discharge several vessels at one time.
Edward Gonzalez, Seaboard Marine’s President, said “We have owned Liebherr cranes for over a decade and are extremely pleased with their reliability.  By now having six Liebherr mobile harbor cranes at our PortMiami facility, we will be able to increase our terminal and vessel productivity.  The versatility to our operations by having multiple mobile harbor cranes as well as several gantry cranes will result in improved cargo turnaround.  These new cranes complement the infrastructure and berthing improvements that PortMiami is making port-wide, as well as specifically at the Seaboard terminal, and will create a tremendous benefit to our customers.”
